Amelia's Birth Story

I had a looooooong pregnancy with Amelia. So, when Dr. Fisher asked if I'd like to be induced a couple days early, I decided, "Why not?" I'm so glad I had that option, and didn't have to go FOREVER past my due date like I did with Addie.

My induction was scheduled for the evening of September 1, 2011. We thought we'd have a baby by Sept. 2nd for sure. I was told to call about an hour before going to the hospital to be sure they had a bed (just as a formality). Only, for me, it wasn't *just* a formality...they didn't have a bed!!!! The nurse wasn't very nice about it either...she was actually pretty mean...but that's another story in and of itself! To try to keep this as condensed as possible, let me just say that, I spent the entire night and most of the half of the next day anxiously and uncomfortably waiting for a bed and also praying that labor would just start on its own because I'd been having contractions for 10 weeks and was sick of it!

At 1:30pm on Sept 2nd, the same mean ol' nurse called and said they had a bed for me. I was actually pretty nervous about going in at this point because I was afraid they'd be mean to me, but I was put with a nice new graduate nurse who was still on orientation, and she was very sweet. By the time I got through all the admitting paperwork and got an IV, it was about 3pm and the nurse started me on a low dose of pitocin. My contractions started right away, but weren't very painful at all. At 4pm, my dr. came in and said I was dilated to 2cm. He inserted a foley catheter into my cervix to help it ripen and help with dilation. They gradually increased the pitocin and my contractions got stronger and stronger. They started to get pretty uncomfortable around 6:30pm, but I knew I'd have to wait until after shift change to get my epidural...which I'd been planning to get all along. I actually could've probably waited even longer to get it, but I REALLY didn't want to miss the window, so I'm glad I got it when I did...it was in by 8:30pm. Even though it took them 4, yes FOUR, attempts to get it in, I would SOOOO do it again! The epidural was awesome! My blood pressure dropped after getting it and I had to have ephederine to keep it from going even lower, but even with that...it was AMAZING! :) Anyways, back to the story...at 10:30, I felt a lot of pressure, so my super-fabulous nurse Sonja (who is one of my good friends from nursing school), came in to check me and said I was at a 7! By 10:45, I was at 10cm! Since I had the epidural and couldn't feel the contractions, I had time to "labor down" so that my body could get prepared to deliver. My water broke at about 11pm. Dr. Fisher arrived at 11:30 and was all gowned up by about 11:35 or so. Even with the epidural, I could feel quite a bit of pain while pushing and knew that I wanted to get her out ASAP, so, I pushed as hard and fast as I could. She was born at 11:43pm!!! My baby girl made it by September 2nd!!! 6lbs, 5oz, 19.5 inches and one of the 2 most beautiful babies I've ever seen in my life.

In the back of my mind, as I'm sure it is with all mothers expecting a second child, I wondered if I could ever love another child as much as I love Addison. As soon as Amelia was born, I knew the answer was yes, absolutely, yes! I love them both so very much! They are the most precious and wonderful gifts that I've ever received. They're both such a blessing and I love them so much more than words could ever describe!!!
